There is no denying that we live in a society that cherishes beauty and youth as if they were the most important things a person can possess. They are not. There is so much more inside of us that matters more than beauty and youth, such as kindness, intelligence, love and vitality, just to name a few. Youth should be cherished and is indeed wasted on the young. If you want to hold on to your youth for as long as possible, we’re not going to judge or comment, because we’re here to help you. You can always look 10 years younger, but today we’ve got 10 habits that are aging you and you need to change them as soon as possible.
10. Not Taking Your Makeup Off Properly
Wearing makeup will not cause wrinkles or age you, but if you don’t take your makeup off properly before you go to sleep, then your skin will suffer. You’ll get clogged pores, pimples, and the chemicals and irritants in your makeup (because even the gentler brands have them) will cause premature lines and wrinkles.
9. Not Getting Enough Sleep
Not getting enough sleep will not only cause bags under your eyes, but it will also age you ahead of time. Not to mention that a recent sleep study has revealed that skimping on sleep has been linked to a shorter lifespan. It makes sense when you think about it. Whenever you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re lacking energy, are mentally sluggish, and have attention issues.
8. Alcohol
Alcohol is a vasodilator, which means that it widens the blood vessels, so that more blood runs through them. This can cause swelling in the face, as well as hands and feet. If you drink alcohol for a larger period of time, then your blood vessels will continue to enlarge, until capillaries, and vessels break.
7. Slouching
It’s simple, really! Slouching or poor posture will deviate the spine and make the muscles and discs of the spine more stressed. This causes pain and fatigue and even spinal degeneration. If this doesn’t spell old age, then I don’t know what does. Remind yourself to sit up straight!
6. Not Using Face and Eye Cream
If you have normal to dry skin, then a good face cream and eye cream are vital for keeping your skin moisturized. Well-fed skin will wrinkle later than dry one. Also, you need to know that the skin around your eyes is thinner and it needs proper care, so please invest in a good eye cream. The eyes truly are windows to the soul.
5. Turning up the Heat Indoors
You could have never guessed it, but one of the habits that ages, is turning up the heat indoors. Heat absorbs moisture out of the air, leading to skin inflammation and dryness. Both of these have aging effects over time, so be careful next time you’re making it hot in your room in the dead of winter.
4. A Sedentary Lifestyle
Needless to say that working out will keep your body younger for longer. It has been documented that people who spend most days indoors and sitting down have a higher risk of developing kidney disease, obesity, cancer and cardiovascular disease. A mere 20 minutes a day of exercise will keep you looking and feeling younger.
3. Not Using Sunscreen All the Time
Yes, you read that correctly, you should use sunscreen all the time. So what if it’s cloudy and March? You don’t have to go to the beach to wear it. You’re running errands in the city and it’s a bright day, your skin is bound to get tanned, and thus, deteriorate. A cream with an SPF between 30 and 50 is recommended. UV light, which is the number one cause of premature aging is present even when it’s raining or it’s cloudy.
2. Cutting Fat from Your Diet
There’s a thing going around Hollywood about how actresses have to choose between their faces and bodies once they go past the age of 40. If they choose the face, it means that they need to gain a bit of weight, to plump up the face (and body). If they choose the body, it means that their face is going to look gaunt and thin. Eating fatty foods will add calories, but fat is amazing for your skin and face plumpness.
1. Smoking Cigarettes
This is not news. We’re not going to tell you that the thousands of chemicals found inside of cigarettes are causing your skin to develop wrinkles and spots. We’re showing you the above picture, which shows two identical twins: one smokes and the other doesn’t. Can you guess which one is the smoker? So, basically, if you’re going to do one thing from our list to delay the process of aging and take care of your skin, this should be it. Quit smoking!
