Movies usually leave a mark on our memory; whether they’re really bad, and we remember them for that, or they’re so good we want to watch them over and over again, we remember little bits and pieces of every movie we watch. Today we take a look at ten movie quotes and punch lines that became part of every movie aficionado’s vocabulary.
1. “Come with me if you want to live!”
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic line from 1991 blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day has since made its way into jokes, has been referenced in other movies and cartoons, and is probably one of the actor’s best known and most popular lines ever. Of course, if you ever quote it, using Schwarzenegger’s trademark Austrian accent is a must!
2. “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.”
Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) made history with this line from “The Godfather.” It was voted the second most memorable line in cinema history and has spawned countless parodies, tributes and pop-cult references since it was first uttered in 1972, and it became a building block for the Mafioso stereotype.
3. “Say hello to my little friend!”
1983 was the year Scarface hit cinemas, and it was an instant success. The movie became a cult classic and Tony Montana’s (played by Al Pacino) iconic line, referring to his grenade launcher, was forever etched in the history of popular, timeless catch phrases.
4. “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
Even those who haven’t seen The Princess Bride (1987) know this line; it will forever hold a place in the “Memorable movie quotes” hall of fame and it’s made its way to an entire array of collectible items, including T-shirts and apparel.
5. “Show me the money!”
This exclamation belongs to Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) and was used in the 1996 movie with the same name. Far from being the best motivational line ever used, it has, nonetheless, caught on and become quite popular. Just like other famous catch phrases, this too was parodied and referenced in other productions.
6. “Run, Forrest, run!”
Forrest Gump (1994) won 6 Oscars, and it deserved every single one of them. Jenny Curran, one of the characters who are central to the story, uttered this phrase when Forrest was being chased by school bullies. It has since remained forever in the hearts and minds of movie watchers everywhere.
7. “I’m the king of the world!”
With eleven Oscars and box-office revenues that will not be surpassed by any film until 2009, James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) is definitely a motion picture classic. Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) exclaims these famous words while standing on the prow of the doomed ship. The tragedy that ensues does not shadow the epic moment, and the phrase becomes a classic.
8. “I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
While less known to those that are not die-hard sci-fi fans, this line from the 1968 sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey was said by HAL9000, the intelligent computer character in the movie, when it denied one of the crewmen access back on board the ship after a space-walk operation. The phrase continues to creep out fans of the movie everywhere even 45 years later.
9. “But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”
Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) says these words at the end of a phone conversation with the man who kidnapped his daughter. This line is from the 2008 movie Taken, and it is so quintessential to the plot that it was even used as a tagline. It’s become so popular among internet users that it has been turned into a meme.
10. “One does not simply walk into Mordor.”
The Lord of the Rings trilogy has spawned many memorable lines, but this one, spoken by Boromir (Sean Bean) in the Fellowship of the Ring (2001) is all over the Internet. Memes and variants based on it have been made, remade, and posted everywhere, and even if you haven’t seen the movie (which is very unlikely), you’ve definitely heard this one at least once.
