It shows that they’re not afraid to show they are vulnerable and that they’re truly interested in the company and their job. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, just make sure they’re valid.
9. Look Busy
OK, so this one is more of a trick, than something that will make your boss like you, but it does work! The thing is that whatever you’re doing in the office, whether you’re getting something from the printer, or getting a glass of water, you need to look busy. Are you going to get a cup of coffee? Look as if you’re going to get the most important cup of coffee in the world.
8. Be Enthusiastic
Lack of enthusiasm will get you in trouble, especially inside corporations. They need to see that you’re into whatever it is that you’re doing. Not just into it, but loving each second of it. Even if you’re not quite an enthusiastic person, we think you should fake it, until you make it.
7. Be Proactive
Every person who’s working a desk job will know of at least two processes that aren’t working well and will know how to improve them. Some people don’t want to change things around the office, but if you want to impress your new boss, be proactive and try to come up with solutions to the issues you’re noticing. Your effort will be appreciated.
6. Own Up to Your Mistakes
We all make mistakes now and then at our job. Frankly, it’s how we learn and grow. A good boss will know this and won’t give its employees a hard time when they’re making mistakes. The best thing you can do in this situation is to admit you’ve made a mistake, say what you’ve learned from it, do something to minimize the damage caused and move on.
5. Dress Well
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look nice at your new job. Getting office appropriate clothes is actually a good thing that your boss will most likely appreciate. It’s a well-known fact that people who are nicely dressed are perceived as better workers than their peers. It’s not fair, but it’s the way our brains work. Just look around and see what people are wearing and take their lead. If nobody’s wearing a suit, then you shouldn’t either.
4. Interact with Coworkers
If you want to impress your boss, then you should really work hard at getting along with your coworkers. Don’t be shy; introduce yourself to the people around you, smile and try to become a part of the team as soon as possible. It’s the only way you’re going to get to keep your job. Remember that your colleagues are just your colleagues; they’re not supposed to be your friends.
3. Learn a New Skill
Showing interest in learning new skills will tell your boss that you care about your job and about the quality of the work you do for their company. It’s also a good idea for your own personal development. Take at least one class per year to continue your professional and personal development.
2. Volunteer
Always offer to help your colleagues when they can’t handle the workload. You’re a team; it’s not every man for themselves! This won’t only impress your boss, but also your colleagues. Before you open your mouth to offer yourself up, make sure you can handle everything. You wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself.
1. Put in Extra Hours
There are companies and then there are companies. If the company you’re working for appreciates extra hours, then you should do it, even if you don’t like it. But if everyone’s leaving the building at 5PM, then you staying behind to impress your boss won’t be viewed as something good.
