10 Celebrity Breast Cancer Survivors

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we thought we would take a look at some celebrities who were diagnosed with this awful disease and managed to beat it. The following celebrities are some tough ladies and we should all learn from them experiences and know that the best treatment is prevention – if you are over the age of 35, have an annual mammogram and routine checkups. Here are those awesome ladies:

1. Sheryl Crow

American singer Sheryl Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer in February of 2006 after a routine mammography – she had masses in both breasts. She made the announcement public a little while after making public her split from her partner, testicular cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong.

2. Kylie Minogue

The beautiful Australian pop singer was diagnosed in 2005 and after having a double mastectomy and chemotherapy she was declared cancer free. She was become an inspiration to women all over the world for her strength and positive outlook on life.

3. Christina Applegate

Just like her mother, Christina Applegate is a breast cancer survivor. She managed a complete recovery following a double mastectomy in 2008. Her disease was caused by a genetic fault, a mutation which often triggers breast cancer in women and men.

4. Cynthia Nixon

Sex and the City star had a history of breast cancer in her family and this led her to take routine mammograms after the age of 35. Two years after she had been declared healthy, she decided to make her illness public. Nowadays she is raising a beautiful baby boy alongside her partner.

5. Kathy Bates

Academy-Award Winner, Kathy Bates has recently revealed she had breast cancer. She had to undergo a double mastectomy, but thankfully neither chemotherapy nor radiations were needed. She declared she was healthy and couldn’t wait to return to acting.

6. Giuliana Rancic

E!’s most beloved reporter, Giuliana Rancic revealed she had breast cancer in her reality show Giuliana and Bill. It was during a mandatory mammogram, while she was trying to get pregnant through In Vitro Fertilization, that she found out about the horrible diagnosis. She is now healthy and a new mommy!

7. Maura Tierney

Known for the role of Abby Lockheart in the hit TV series ER, Maura Tierney discovered she had breast cancer in the summer of 2009. She had her tumor removed and has since been cancer-free. You can catch her in the ABC drama The Whole Truth.

8. Carly Simon

The You’re so Vain singer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. She received treatment and succeeded to defeat the horrible disease. During her recovery she wrote her autobiographical album The Bedroom Tapes. If you’re looking for some insight into the artist’s life at the time, work up the courage and listen to it.

9. Olivia Newton-John

In 1992 Olivia Newton-John, famous for her role as Sandy in Grease, learnt she had breast cancer. She managed to fight it and come out a winner and she has been active in bringing breast cancer awareness to women all over the world. Her 2005 album Stronger than Before talks about her struggle.

10. Richard Roundtree

Breast cancer not only affects women and Richard Roundtree is living proof. The actor who played John Shaft in the 70’s hit series Shaft discovered a lump in his pectoral tissue in 1993 and had to have a double mastectomy and chemotherapy. Fortunately, the treatment was a success and he’s still healthy.
