It premiered on February 6th 2012 and I believe it’s not just me who believes it was a real smash (perfectly chosen name) from the start. With music belonging to Columbia Records and 36 studio recordings released after the first season, the hit series seems to be a pretty good portrayal of the ups and downs a musical goes through before it hits Broadway. And although the actors are big names of the industry (Angelica Huston, Debra Messing, Jack Davenport), the songs of the series is what preoccupies us at the moment. The musical talent of Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee and Christian Borle has provided us thus far with some amazing songs:

Let Me Be Your Star
This is an original song around which the musical Bombshell revolves. It is supposed to fit into the storyline of the musical in such a way that it sums Marilyn up and, according to Tom Levitt and Julia Huston (the writers) it is the song which describes the musical best.

I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn’t Love to Howl
Another original song in a series of many really good ones that is performed by both Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn) and Katharine McPhee (Karen Cartwright) and describes men’s behavior at their best and the way Marilyn could always get her way by playing on their weaknesses.

Shake It Out
The song from the already beloved Florence and The Machine was, in my humble opinion, done justice by Katharine McPhee. She sings it with moving grace and her soft interpretation as opposed to that of Florence sheds a whole new light on an already amazing song.

Don’t Forget Me
Introduced in the 15th episode, this original song is sung by Karen Cartwright during the Boston preview for the musical after being written in under 3 hours by Tom and Julia, as the original suicide scene seemed unsuitable for the ending. It is a moving song that ends Season 1 with a bang.

Mama Makes Three
In the first episode of the second season, a new character is introduced, the successful Broadway actress Veronica Moore who sings this song from the musical Beautiful.

Broadway, Here I Come!
The second new character that appears in season two is Jimmy Collins, a young, talented artist and songwriter who together with his roommate are working on a Broadway musical and meet Karen in a bar where she, after being impressed with this song, involves Derek in her attempt of making them a success.

I Can’t Let Go
Written for Veronica Moore by the two striving artists, Jimmy and his roommate Kyle, and performed at her one night only concert where she gets a standing ovation, this song is a testimony to the talent and vocal range and power of Jennifer Hudson.

Heart Shaped Wreckage
Sung in the sixth episode of season two, this song was written by Jimmy Collins and Kyle Bishop for their musical as Karen returns after having renounced her role as the leading female in the musical because of pressures by Jerry, the producer of Bombshell.

Rewrite This Story
In the next episode, the two aspiring artists are told that their musical, Hit List should receive a new beginning or at least a narrator to explain the essence of the show. So, as a new opening, Karen and Jimmy perform this song in front of their producer and because of it, are offered the bigger stage for their musical.

I Heard Your Voice In a Dream
This would be my personal favorite up to now, the original song performed in episode 8 of the second season, also written by Jimmy and Kyle, which portrays the feeling of betrayal the main character of Hit List feels after the female lead leaves.
